We just arrived from our travels in Italy where our first destination took us to the whimsical portico-clad medieval town of Bologna.

We were only there for a couple of days but still managed to have some time to enjoy the last of the late summertime sunshine.  Bologna being considered to be the Italian culinary capital, our brief stop here didn’t dissuade me and my husband from trying out the local cuisines typical to the heart of the Emilia Romagna region.  I can sincerely say I’ve had the best Parmigiano Reggiano, Tagliatelle alla Bolognese and Tortellini Pasta in this place which explains the cheesy grin on my face while wandering the historic archways of this city.

I can’t believe how quickly time in Bologna has passed.  My easy holiday outfit was inspired by the community’s love affair with red orange hues which explains the city’s nickname, “La Rossa.”  This surreal afternoon was over two weeks ago now and I am missing the sunrise-to-sunset days exploring Italy.

We took a breather from our culinary escapes by stopping over some key sights:

  • Towers of the Asinelli and Garisenda (their famous leaning red brick towers)
  • Fountain of Nepture (monumental fountain with a beautiful Bronze figure of Neptune)
  • Pinacoteca Nazionale (Bologna’s principal art gallery)
  • Basilica San Petronio in Piazza Maggiore (the city’s Patron Saint)
  • Basilica Santo Stefano (four medieval churches mixed-up together under one roof)
  • Basilica San Domenico (Italy’s most important Dominican church built to house the body of Saint Dominic who’s buried here)
  • And the Museum of Anatomical Waxworks (18th century amazing anatomical collection and a personal must-see)
