As a follow-up on an article I wrote about my thoughts regarding our first year wedding anniversary where I shared photos of our styled reception, I naturally cannot help but write another much more focused blog post dedicated to just bridal accessories.
Bridal accessory, if you try to type it on Google, is one of the most searchable key words online. When I first got engaged with my husband, my maid of honor will gladly tell you that the very first thing we did was getting my bridal gown. Being the fashion minded person that I am, I guess it just came instinctively. Although I have been very lucky and literally found the dress of my dreams a week after, I wouldn’t have minded it either if I took the time out in looking for my wedding gown. I guess you can say that when I start working on a project, I tend to want to finish off my checklist right away [not the same when we’re talking about school projects though]! In regards to the events that I plan, I tend to become positively enthralled and surely a perfectionist [maybe even to a fault].
Planning what you are going to wear on your wedding day is [obviously] of an absolute importance. When I was in high school, my classmates and I planned what we were going to wear to the prom for months [all-girl private school problems]. With this said, allow me to enumerate all the fashion-related things that you’re going to have to think about on your Big Day: Your Bridal Gown, Wedding Shoes, Jewelry, Hair Accessory and last but not the least – you Hair and Makeup Team.

Bridal Gown
In choosing a bridal gown, most brides basically decide between the different kinds of silhouettes: Ball gown, A-line, Trumpet, Mermaid, Sheath, Tea-length, or Mini. Honestly, all these styles are pretty much acceptable to any kind of wedding. Like I said on my previous article, the most important thing is that it should match the theme of your wedding. I think, in choosing a wedding dress, the most important factor you have to consider is the fabric and its embellishments. Just having finished textile studies from FIDM, choosing the fabric and the way it drapes on you, the way it will look when photographed, and how it will stand out while matching the theme of your wedding are all things you have to keep in mind. Make sure that you bring a camera with you when you are trying on your dress. This will serve as a guide and will help show you the right dress to choose.
Wedding Shoes
As much as I love styling my clothes, I think I would say that my first love relevant to fashion would actually be shoes. There is something sexy and alluring about them. When I look at a person’s shoe, somehow, I kind of get an idea of the personality of that person. Therefore, don’t forget that the shoes are of utmost importance when styling your wedding wear. In fact, I can’t even think of any other day where your heels will be photographed as much. So, don’t take it lightly. A lot of women I know, although they would like to wear heels on their wedding discard the idea as it could be painful. Before my wedding, I decided that I was going to “practice” as much as I can by wearing high heels to work everyday for at least 1-2 months before my wedding day. I think it worked because I was able to walk comfortably in my 4 inch high heel wedding shoes for at least 11 hours before I finally succumb and borrowed some slips from my friend that night [which I haven’t returned – whoops! MC, it’s waiting for you here in England]!
Jewelry
Working in the jewelry industry for such a long time, I think jewelry is something that every girl should really start investing on. In my opinion, a fancy chandelier or drop earrings would be the most elegant type of earrings one can wear, while a simple diamond stud earrings would be the most versatile. A tennis bracelet is also always a classic. White gold and diamonds are the most commonly used. However, rose gold has had a great comeback in the last few years as well in regards to bridal jewelry.
Head Jewelry
In our trend forecasting classes in fashion school, we’ve always talked how head jewelry is up and coming. What better way to show some sparkle than through your hair right? Whether you use it as a detail on your wedding bun, as a headband, or a modern crown, the most important thing is that before you purchase your head jewelry, you must ensure that it goes well with your dress. Please do not purchase one until you’ve finalized your wedding gown. This should be at the last of your list.
Hair & Makeup
If you are a bride that is contemplating on whether you need a professional hair and makeup team – think again. I’ve completed my first bachelor’s degree as a communication major where I learned the basics of photography and filmmaking. Trust me when I say that there are many things that will look different in a photograph or film. Even with blogging alone, many times, my makeup wouldn’t translate properly on my photos. A lot of brides tend to get overwhelmed especially when they are not used to putting on makeup everyday. However, you must look at the bigger picture. On your wedding day, between your dress and all the festivity going on around you, you need to make certain that your face will have that extra radiance that cannot be achieved unless it is professionally done. Whatever it is that you want to do on your big day, you must assure that you do it right. Don’t be afraid to trust your makeup artist. I’m telling you, hair and makeup is a wedding investment that you cannot forego. Make the appointment early. Most of the good ones are booked well over months in advance – especially if your wedding is on a weekend. Research well and don’t be shy to ask for recommendations from your friends and family. Trust but verify. Take the time to do a sample hair and make up with the make up artist so you will know what to expect come your big day. Practice is a means of inviting the perfection you desire on your wedding day.
With all the wedding hoopla, the days leading up to the wedding can certainly be stressful. No event is flawless. Believe me, no matter how hard you try, something will go wrong. The best thing you can do is revel in the excitement of your family, and friends around you that day. A professional hair and makeup team will ensure that you will look and feel your best – don’t underestimate them. The night will come by so fast and before you know it, you’re already on your way to your exotic honeymoon. Take pleasure and don’t let a single moment go by without you relishing the moment. Have fun out there!
