The Curry Culture in Singapore

1

After enjoying the bursts of rain and sunshine as I relaxed in nearby Sentosa Island (see my post here), I was ready to start my evening and get cultured with Singapore’s local food scene.

Multi-ethnic and colorful, I learned that cuisines in this city include a mix of Indian, Malaysian, Chinese, Indonesian, Peranakan and Western gastronomy.  With this in mind, I ventured off to The Curry Culture hoping to be… well… cultured, the Singaporean way.

Snuggled in the heart of Orchard, a vibrant and vivid Cuppage Terrace, I found my first fiery taste of Singapore in The Curry Culture.  Dubbed as Singapore’s best kept secret, this little Indian café restaurant had a stylish, welcoming appeal.  I’ve often heard that the Singapore food scene is diverse as it is appetizing and I was thrilled to experience it in this gem of a restaurant.

Set in the trendy Cuppage Terrace, The Curry Culture features a North Indian cuisine with influences from Afganistan.  The restaurant has an enormous local following in Singapore which I found comforting.  As I got seated, I couldn’t help but pay attention to the laid-back crowd.  I’m happy to see Singapore being so relaxed!

As a refreshing welcome drink, I tried the April Lady featuring mango with coconut as well as the Somras, which was a fusion of rum and cranberry.

I was fortunate enough to try a variety of The Curry Culture’s menu.  The Malay broccoli with cheese and cream went excellently with the enticing mint sauce.  It was perfectly cooked. I could somehow taste a hint of herbs infused with the cheese.  The Lamb Vindaloo tasted clean, flavorful and soft while the chicken was perfectly grilled, savory and delicious.  I really enjoyed the Daal Makhani. This has been my go-to curry dish. It hasn’t failed me… yet!

The saffron rice arrived along with more variations of curry cuisines.  I found the Malabar Prawn Masala mild yet somewhat sweet while the Eggplant Curry (Hydebaradi Baingan) was delectable in its peanut and fresh coconut sauce.  One of my favorites would be the tender Chicken Karma in a cashew and Rose flavored curry with sweet cream.

Before traveling to Singapore, I knew very little of curry dishes.  Here at The Curry Culture, I learned that there are over a hundred Curry food cuisines that prevail.  I would love to travel to India someday.  The Curry Culture is surely the place to go for an authentic, prismatic cultural curry experience in the heart of Singapore.
