It is surprisingly easy to get to the Amalfi Coast from Naples by public transportation once you know what you are looking for so allow me to give you my travel spoilers. There are no bullet trains that goes to the Amalfi Coast but there are transit options once you get to Naples.

Starting from the Napoli Centrale (Naples Central Station), you can take the local regional train. Look for signs for the Circumvesuviana which is the train system that passes through Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii before finally concluding its trip at Sorrento.

At the time we rode the Circumvesuviana, the fare for my husband and I was only 7.60 euros. This was quite reasonable given the distance. It took about 50 minutes to get from Naples to Sorrento. There are ticket windows at the entrance of the platforms, however, they only accept cash payments. Based on the signs we saw, all Circumvesuviana trains going to Sorrento depart from platform number 3. When you finally get on, I recommend sitting on the left side so that you will have a superior view of Mount Vesuvius.

When arriving in Sorrento, you can take the Sita Bus to the multiple cliff towns along the gorgeous Amalfi Coast. The ticket you purchase in Sorrento for the Sita Bus is a 24-hour all-day ticket. We arrived in Sorrento at around 5pm so we made full use of it by going back to Pompeii the following day. There are schedules for the Sita Bus posted at each bus stop. They are general on time although I would recommend arriving at the bus stop 10 minutes early as our bus in Positano arrived 8 minutes early and departed before the scheduled arrival time. Better safe than sorry!

The ride on the Sita Bus was very enjoyable. When going towards the Amalfi coast from Sorrento, I recommend sitting on the right side so that you have the ocean view. If you are staying overnight at any of the towns of the Amalfi Coast, just know that these charming towns are built vertically and you must expect an assortment of stairs.

They have local buses that serves each individual towns but since we packed so light, we decided to take the hill down. I recommend contacting the hotel you’re booked with in the Amalfi for pointers on how to get to them.  We truly enjoy taking public transportation in foreign countries as it allows independence and freedom. If you prefer taking a more relaxed approach, that is if you are not so comfortable with dealing with transfers and translating signs and directions, there is the private car option.

There are several private car companies that service the route from Naples to the Amalfi Coast Towns. Private drivers would start action by requesting information as to which hotel you will be staying in and the train or flight you will be arriving in Naples and will graciously arrange the transit service door to door.  You can google this service and when we did it, the price starts as low as 110 euros. It may be worth it if there is a group of three of you but the total cost for my husband and I was 7.60 for the train and 16 euros for the 24-hour all-day Sita Bus ticket. There’s quite a large difference in price but sometimes that relaxed way of travel is just quite worth it.
