Earning the term Saturnia from the Roman god of Saturn, legend has it that its springs were born when Saturn sent a thunderbolt unto earth, exasperated with men who kept fighting against each other. Provoking sulfurous and warm water to gush out from the crater of a volcano in Maremma, the waters enveloped the crater and calmed the inhabitants down. Rain water cruises on an approximate forty-year journey from the hills of Monte Amiata, filtering drop by drop through micro-fissures of cavernous limestone and travels through the thermal pools at Terme di Saturnia. It is important to note that due to the waters’ natural elements containing a “sulfurous-carbonic-sulphate-bicarbonate-alkaline” content, do expect a sulfurous aroma in and around the grounds.
Pleasuring in its flow, guests would be happy to know that the waters also have a daily turnover rate of four hours which means the water in the resort’s thermal pools are never stagnant. It has quite the healing properties that could be helpful to treat all kinds of skin diseases and some dental, vascular, reproductive, and respiratory diseases as well. At this point on our trip, we started having that tingling feeling of not wanting to leave. Aside from being surrounded by authentic, delicious Tuscan food at arm’s length, there’s also the stunning Italian countryside that will leave you breathless day by day during your stay at country-chic Terme di Saturnia.
This has been quite the cultural experience. I feel like such an Etruscan woman now! Aside from that exhilarating feeling of breathing new life into my body thanks to the healing thermal pools, I also gained much knowledge about experiencing the ancient health and wellness culture of the Romans first-hand.
