There are certain moments in life where one would feel like she has gone full circle.
Nostalgia happens when you come across a place or moment where you feel like you’ve returned to the beginning. Such is what happens every time I go back home yet I would almost always feel as though I am a tourist. Copenhagen is not that city but Tivoli Gardens, the oldest theme park in Europe, certainly feels like that. My husband and I are from Los Angeles and theme parks are scenes that we are more than familiar with. Some reports say Tivoli Gardens inspired Walt Disney to create the first Disneyland. There are many similarities, I tell you. But I do believe they are both striking and exceptional in their own ways. Let me take you back a few months ago when my husband and I uncovered this not-so-secret garden in the middle of flourishing Copenhagen.

We arrived on a luminous spring afternoon at the Tivoli Gardens on our short but sweet sojourn in Denmark. The sky was showing off as it was brilliant and incandescent as a perfect afternoon could be in early May in Scandinavia. The pretty cherry blossoms were in full bloom framing the already magnificent attractions inside the Tivoli Gardens. Upon arrival, we noticed an array of whimsical structures and exotic architectures that seem to mesmerize and captivate our childlike senses. A stroll in the park will most certainly conjure vivid memories of sections and passages from Hans Christian Anderson’s notable and outstanding fairy tales. In the summer months, the park transforms and play host to jazz, folk, pop and classical music performances that create a truly vibrant ambiance for both the residents and holidaymakers.
The Tivoli being one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, there was certainly a sense of enigma and old world glamour that exuded all throughout the park. The beautifully manicured gardens were burgeoning with thriving spring floras that further awakened wistfulness. Though it’s quite compact, the site being in the middle of the city, we can absolutely say that it is filled with a variety of things to do. An array of theatre shows & musicals were available as well as a diversity of spectacular rides. A very family oriented place, ducks and peacocks may randomly cross your path for you to appreciate and be captivated with. If you prefer a more romantic flair, go in the evening where the gardens provide a beautiful backdrop for free concerts, water illuminating shows and a thousand colorful lights creating an animated atmosphere.
As my husband and I reminisce during our time at the Tivoli Gardens, we can’t help but be awe-struck that the amusement park has been open since 1843. Both an international attraction and a national treasure, a visit to Copenhagen just won’t be complete without experiencing this park that was visited many times by famous people like Hans Christian Anderson, Walt Disney and many others. One thing is for sure, even if you don’t go for a ride, you will most certainly fall in love with its gardens. Offering a matchless blend of big pleasures and exhilarating in traditional Danish culture, the Tivoli exudes an aura that excites, electrifies and invigorates both the young and the old. Apparently it’s most atmospheric in Halloween & Christmas so don’t let the weather stop you from visiting this magical playground.
