As I taste my way through Singapore, I can honestly say that there have been many occasions on my trip in Asia that would embody remarkable and unforgettable moments.
Singapore, for me, was a delightful and charming mix of modern metropolitan scene in the midst of hundred-old trees framing European colonial architecture.

Singapore, with its many migrants, has an energetic, charismatic and compelling food culture. One, in particular, called Peranakan Cuisine (also called Nyonya Cuisine) caught my attention as it is said to be the next big thing in British dining. As my natural curiosity emerged, I learned that Peranakan cooking dates back to the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty as a way of cooking by descendants of Chinese who intermarried with women at the port of Malacca in the Malaysian Peninsula as a strategic and diplomatic gesture. As the two cultures blended, they formed this very specific form of cooking that’s known to be exceptionally delicious and savory yet remarkably time-consuming. Later, it became known as Singapore’s oldest fusion cuisine.
With this brilliant and insightful fact in hand, I, together with my friend, Celestine, who’s been kind enough to show me around town, jaunted off to this lovely dining room named Indocafe the White House, an expert in the field of Penang-style Peranakan cuisine.
On a classy and leafy neighborhood, we arrived at the restaurant and were welcomed graciously by our hosts. With the black and white bungalow as its setting, a unique feature found in historic European colonial architecture, we breathlessly and eagerly sat and basked in the elegance of Indocafe. The décor was a synthesis of rich, dark wood and historic treasures framed on the walls like a beautiful gallery, which features its rich and notable past. If there was any indication of the refinement and nobility that characterized the place, I was sure that I was in for a treat and was certainly excited to sample what they have prepared for Styleat30.
Colorful and ultra-flavorful, Penang-style Peranakan in Indocafe was a burst of spices and aromas. In my travels in Asia, I would say their version of Beef Rendang was the one that truly swept me off my feet. The flavors of their dishes featured a hot, zesty, sweetness to it that is truly unique to their style of cooking. I love how their menu was filled with such spirited dishes – luscious, gutsy and accented with appetizing, highly flavored essences. With the kind of effort needed to make Penang-style Peranakan cuisine, I could truly say that their efforts showed in the exquisite and enticing deliciousness of the food presented.
Indocafe the White House exceptionally exceeded my expectations. With the stately interior design of the restaurant coupled with its skillful and exemplary cooking, this place is certainly a splendid gastronomic destination when touring the abounding city that is Singapore.
