Caving in Iceland Inside The Lava Tunnel

4

Iceland is a beautiful, natural phenomena of a country that is famous for its awe-inspiring, rugged landscape.

It is certainly a must-visit for anyone who loves the great outdoors.  It has been on my bucket list for a while and, believe me when I say, nothing will ever prepare you for the breathtaking natural masterpiece this place offers.

I’ve been to over 40 countries and more than 150 cities around the world.  Iceland is simply one of those places that just doesn’t disappoint if you’re looking for true natural beauty and exquisiteness.

In here, I remembered how God truly is The Great Artist.  And how time is such an important element in the equation of refinement.

I’ve toured the country so I have many destinations to share within Iceland.  Let me start with an unpretentious and exceptional haven for nature lovers that isn’t too far from its capital, Reykjavik.

I had the good fortune of stopping by a great lava tunnel one invigorating afternoon in Iceland.  The last time I was in a lava tunnel, I was absolutely floored at the allure and delicacy of it.  I was in Africa then… Now, I’m in one of the most northern parts of the world and both took my breath away with its extravagant textures and colors.

Spectacular lava tubes and caves in Iceland were created after a natural phenomenon of surface lava solidifying while magma continues to flow in tunnels during a volcanic eruption.  This kind of excursion is best seen by small groups on a caving day tour.

We arrived by a shuttle bus from Reykjavik to The Lava Tunnel where an expert caving guide waited for us for the tour to commence.  This was, of course, after a scenic drive through a lava field – a majestic sight in itself.

The Lava Tunnel’s tour takes approximately 3 hours. While there, you will discover the natural rare occurrences inside.  The surface is uneven so be sure to bring proper footwear. There were some catwalk platforms too. Don’t forget to bring outerwear also as it could be quite cool.  Mine is provided by Regatta Great Outdoors, a British brand specializing in waterproof jackets & walking boots.

The Lava Tunnel tour provides a helmet with a flash light as well as an expert guide that traverses the cave with your small group experience.

We first entered through a remarkable, narrow cave entrance which opened to bring to light an exceptional backdrop of incredible lava formations and marvelous shades ranging from auburn to deep scarlet.

The majesty of The Lava Tunnel is almost indescribable.  One would truly have to experience it in real life to see the nobility of the lava stalactites hanging from above, in the most interesting of forms.  It felt like a natural palace in there, made of the grandeur of lava, mysterious in the illustriousness of the forces of nature.

The Lava Tunnel Raufarhólshellir is one of the longest and famous lava tubes in all of Iceland.  It is located just 30 minutes from Reykjavik, perfect for a morning or afternoon tour.  It is accessible all year round.  In the winter, dramatic ice sculptures will bedazzle you along the entrance of the cave making the experience more eye-catching, astounding and electrifying.

Book your tickets here.  There are also the Extreme Lava Tunnel Tour and the Evening Lava Tunnel Tour for those who would love to have a greater and deeper adventure.

The Lava Tunnel is such a striking experience that is so quintessentially Icelandic!  What a unique, life-changing destination for those seeking a wondrous journey.
