Alluring Lagos Mare Hotel in Naxos

16

Naxos is an island that fuses ancient ruins and beach culture distinctively.

It is also home to Mt. Zeus, the island’s tallest mountain named after the father of all Greek gods.  Greek mythology claims that Zeus grew up in Naxos.  I got acquainted with Naxos Island recently and now understand the mystique and charm that surrounds it.

Blessed with the most fertile land amongst all the other Greek Isles, it is sometimes referred to as the “green leaf” of the Aegean Sea.  My appetite for the outdoor adventure was completely satisfied as I found myself traversing all over the island.

With its fertile valleys, marble mountains, plateaus, springs, rivers, caves and endless beaches, my days in Naxos started early and ended late.  I was quite lucky to have a chic hotel to come home to – Lagos Mare Boutique Hotel.

It is a harmonious oasis in the middle of an impeccably history-rich and adventure-packed paradise.

Lagos Mare Boutique Hotel is situated in the famed Agios Prokopios, a quaint seaside village in Naxos. Believe me when I say that Naxos is blessed beyond belief with the most magnificent crystal clear waters that sparkles from sunrise to sunset.

Agios Prokopios is considered as one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in all of Greece and Europe.  This golden stretch of sand extends approximately 1.5 km. and is located near Lagos Mare Boutique Hotel.

Greek mythology even mentions that “Dionysus decorated the sand and the clear blue waters with grains of gold, so that with the help of the stars, he could create a sparkly seductive environment for his romantic strolls with Ariadne” (https://www.lagosmare.gr/).

True enough, we experienced a magical starry night filled with gusto when we experienced a wonderful gastronomic supper at the hotel’s feature restaurant called 1924 Restaurant.

Based on their family origins of sea connoisseurs, 1924 was the year the family’s hand crafted wooden fishing boat called the Eastern Star reached Naxos from their hometown of Smyrna.  The restaurant is ode to their great grandfather’s zest and spice for life and love for a peaceful life in Greece.

Every day, we were spoiled with a fantastic spread of typical Greek breakfast homemade and sourced from the best local farmers in this mythical island.  From the homemade Greek yogurt to their sweet handcrafted jams, everything they served tasted heavenly and divine.

The owner, Nikos Kazantzakis (pictured above with me), claims that “if paradise was on earth, it would be here.”  In truth, Lagos Mare Boutique Hotel was founded by a seaman and globetrotter three generations ago.

After plenty of talking and speaking in great company under the starry-filled nights in Lagos Mare Boutique Hotel’s grassy courtyard, a comfy and spacious room awaits featuring all the homey luxuries one would ever need in a majestic island in the middle of Aegean Sea.

I was pleasantly surprised to see an ever-so-faithful Nespresso coffee machine in my bedroom, the same kind I use at home.  It provided the perfect wellspring that allows one to feel at home while being conveniently located from the radiant sandy shores of Agios Prokopios.
