What’s there to do in Luzern?

10

As I mentioned on my post on the Swiss Alps (http://styleat30.com/mount-stanserhorn), I was intrigued with Switzerland due to my Aunt Myrna’s prolific encounters during her travels in Europe.  Luzern, for instance, was a village that she abundantly mentioned in her stories as an incredible, magical place that was the epitome of the perfect Swiss storybook-like village that one only encounters on books.  My husband and I’s rendezvous in this little Swiss town was certainly just that:  Unbelievably magical and nothing short of marvelous and enchanting.

The thing about Switzerland is that although every sort of traveler you meet tries to excite you with accounts of how tempting the crystal clear lakes and mountain views are, one still cannot help but be seduced by the undeniable beauty of the entire region.  As if Swiss chocolate, cheese and watches aren’t enough to entice revelers from coming, iconic heritages such as this one called the Chapel Bridge also add to an adventurer’s motivation.  Supposedly built in the 14th century to prevent invaders from ravaging the village, it stands still in time immemorial even after a regrettable fire in 1933 tried to put it down.  With the swans encircling around the River Reuss day in and out, the oldest covered wooden footbridge in Europe is surely the picture of perfection rain or shine.  We walked through it admiring its impressive timber structure many times during our time here, while appreciating each painted fresco on the ceiling while we cross the Reuss River.

There is truly something about history that I find quite so inspiring.  I can’t even begin to fathom how many times my husband and I have come to the realization that America, our home country, is so new compared to Europe.  There is something about seeing piece in history.  Just like this quaint little Chapel Bridge, it continues to prevail and allows us to be thoughtful of the past while helping us realize how each and every encounter is so important to the development of our human existence.  God, the master handcrafter, has designed our lives to be so encompassing allowing the past to teach and inspire the future.  Beyond doubt, traveling has taught my husband and me how small we are in this masterstroke called life. I admit there is peace when acknowledging this well-known concept: “Let go and let God.”

One of my most favorite words to the wise would certainly be the saying “Never Burn Bridges.”  The expression is apparently derived from an ancient military tactic that if one were to burn down a bridge after crossing it, one could not cross the bridge back to retreat.  How fitting is that message for an ancient bridge that surely was a target of many adversaries.  I find its name, Chapel Bridge, a proper nickname for a bridge that stood strong and journeyed its way from a time of strife to peace.  What an inspiring little mark one simple little structure has made to many lives that’s walked the path.  Connection and communication that leads to positivity and progress is the small little message that came our way on a simple day like today.
